Requirements: THIS POSTING IS TO ESTABLISH A ROSTER OF ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES FOR FUTURE VACANCIES.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The person selected to fill this position will be required, as a condition of employment, to participate in a Hepatitis B inoculation program at the City's expense. This position requires that the applicants be able to be bonded under terms of the City's blanket bond. Therefore applicants cannot have committed any dishonest acts before or after placement in this position. Applicants must authorize release of any information from appropriate agencies regarding the applicants criminal history. You must present proof that you have passed (30 wpm and 80% accuracy) the data entry test given by the Capitol Area Michigan Works Office. The data entry test must accompany the City of Lansing job application for this position.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED and certification from the Corrections Officer Vocational Program or the County and Local Detention Officer program requiring a minimum of 23 term or 15 semester credits approved by the Corrections Commission and the State Civil Service Commission or an Associate's Degree in any related field. A degree in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement is preferred but is not required. Applicants must pass the data entry test given by the Capital Area Michigan Works Office (passing is 30 wpm and 80% accuracy). Submit the data entry results along with the completed City of Lansing Employment Application by August 6, 2010.

Description: - Ensures safety of prisoners while they are being held in the City's jail.

- Physically searches all prisoners for weapons, drugs and other potentially dangerous and/or unauthorized materials.

- Subdues uncooperative prisoners using physical effort with the arms to seize, grasp, hold and move them and applies passive
restraints as required.

- Enforces safety standards for prisoners, officers and others.

- Questions prisoners for information needed for booking and records this information taking care to ensure accuracy of
information.

- Listens and visually monitors security cameras for signs of conflict and/or potential conflicts in the lock-up areas.

- Attaches tags to property of prisoners and provides for proper storage of these items.

- Issues food and medicine, as prescribed, to prisoners.

- Escorts prisoners to and from their cells, and may accompany Court Officers with them to judicial proceedings.

- Types and records bails, bonds and other forms for prisoner release using finger dexterity on a standard typewriter keyboard.

- Takes runaway reports and enters the information on the LEMS (Law Enforcement Management System) computer terminal
requiring finger dexterity and the ability to read information off a video display screen.

- Writes hand written reports regarding runaways, mental petitions and other job related matters taking care to ensure legibility.

- Maintains the Daily bulletin which is a record of serious accidents to officers, special attentions, attempts to locate felony
warrants and other pertinent information for all police personnel.

- Makes LEIN (Law Enforcement Information Network) checks on all prisoners lodged in the lockup using finger dexterity on
a computer terminal.

- Assists jail supervisor in ordering and putting away jail supplies.
