How can I become a firefighter? To become a firefighter for the City of Lansing you must be a high school graduate or GED equivalent and have no felony convictions. Applicants must pass a written test and an ability test to be considered for a job. Call the City Personnel office at 483-4004 to find out if we are currently hiring. Check out our employment page. There is no fee for our fire and rescue services. However, the Fire Department does charge for emergency ambulance calls. All or part of this cost may be covered by your insurance program. How many people work for the Fire Department?
There are about 220 people in the Fire Suppression Division. These are the people who ride the fire trucks and ambulances. There are an additional 35-40 people assigned to our other divisions, such as Fire Prevention, Training, Emergency Management, Administration, Dispatch, and Maintenance/Alarm. All of these people play a crucial role in our goal of providing the best possible protection for the lives and property of the citizens of Lansing. Back to Top
What type of schedule do firefighters work?
Firefighters and emergency medical personnel assigned to Fire Suppression duties work 24 hour shifts, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. They work 24 hours on , 24 hours off, 24 hours on, 72 hours off schedule. When not responding to calls the firefighters train, either in the station or at the LFD Training Academy, maintain equipment and practice skills. Back to Top
