Eric Hewitt First Ward Councilmember
Eric's victory in the 2007 election is his first venture in to the political arena. Eric resides in Lansing's Northtown Neighborhood where he has been a proven community activist for many years. He participates in community organizations to: ensure the safety of residents; preserve existing neighborhoods; and promote a better future for Lansing.
In recognition of Eric's hard work and dedication, his neighbors nominated him for the 2007 Bea Christy Volunteer of the Year Award. His efforts along with those of his neighbors, Community Police Officers, and other City officials have succeeded to provide safe and affordable housing in Lansing's Northtown.
Eric was born in Columbia, South Carolina. He grew up in a military family; and has lived in many different cities and countries. Eric earned a B.A. and B.M.A. degrees from the University of South Carolina, in history, physical forensic anthropology, and mass communications. He later did his graduate work at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he majored in fine art photography.
Shortly after moving to Lansing, Eric became an adjunct professor in the photography program at Lansing Community College. In addition to teaching, he worked for the Department of Corrections at the State Prison of Southern Michigan. While at the Department of Corrections, Eric was a member of United Auto Workers Union Local 6000, and served as a union steward. Eric now works at the Michigan Department of Human Services as a senior financial policy analyst. Eric Hewitt serves on the following Committees and Boards:
